Marriages may or may not be made in heaven, but the preparations definitely have to be made on earth, and all those who have gone through it know its no mean feat. There are innumerable decisions to take, hordes of shopping to be done, invitations to be sent out and more. One of the things which cause panic to the would-be bride is her wedding bouquet. The style, design, choice of flowers to match her wedding gown and also the color code of the wedding décor has to be kept in mind. Here we have given few simple steps to make a cascade wedding bouquet yourself to avoid unnecessary hassles with the florist.

The cascade wedding bouquet is carried by the bride on her arms, the overflowing flowers and foliage giving her a soft, elegant yet fairy – like look. The shape of the cascade or teardrop bridal bouquet is perfect for an elegant dress.

Materials you will need:

Bouquet holder

Satin cloth

Scissors

Rose, carnations, gardenias, gerberas and small flowers

Ivy

Floral pins

Instructions:

Step1

The first and the most important step is to select flowers that will complement the bride. While selecting, keep in mind her skin tone, color of her dress and color code of the wedding décor .Roses, carnations, gardenias, tulips and hydrangeas are the most popular choices for this type of wedding bouquets. Sunflowers make a gorgeous bouquet, too.

Step2

Take the bouquet holder and grasp it tightly. Now we shall start working. Cover the entire foam area with flat greenery first. This will ensure that no part of the foam is visible. For shaping the cascade bridal bouquet, place the first long spray of flowers in that part of the bouquet holder which is facing away from the bride. This should be the longest part of the arrangement.

Step3

Now, insert flowers on both sides of the first layer. Cut each of these down about three inches shorter than the original flower length so they will be shaped nicely.

Step4

Now that we have made the basic structure, let’s fill it up. Insert the larger flowers such as gardenias to fill the top portion of the bouquet and the smaller flowers to fill the remaining spaces. Secure the flowers with glue or floral pins. Allow some of the flowers to tip slightly forward.

Step6

Drape long flowing ivy from the holder by lifting gently underneath the base of the flowers. The shape of the cascade bridal bouquet is like a waterfall. The effect should be long and flowing. Finish off with covering the holder in satin or tulle.

Flower Arrangements - History of Cascade Wedding Bouquets

The wedding bouquet was originally a special wedding gift from the bridegroom to his wife on the wedding day. On the special day, the bridegroom would pick flowers from the field and arrange them himself to present his bride. This act of love was greatly treasured by the bride who carried it with pride the whole day- the day most significant in their lives.

However, this beautiful tradition has lost much of its original essence and the task of making the bridal bouquet is relegated to a wedding professional or florist. Many bridal bouquets today are made without much regard to the origin of this custom. Therefore, on many occasions, the bouquet turns out to be a creation of wire and glue, rather than a bunch made up with genuine love and affection.

One of the most elegant forms of the wedding bouquets is the cascade bouquet. It gets its name from its overflowing cascading structure. Towards the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, most of the bridal bouquets were made of roses or carnations. Usually these bouquets were hand tied. In order to give the bouquet an elongated look and therefore make it more elegant, long vines of Asparagus setaceus “Plumosus” were added .These bouquets were carried by the bride on their arms with the flowers and vines overflowing like a cascading waterfall.

However, with the passage of time, the cascade bouquet lost much of its free flowing structure and gained a bit of stiffness. The stylized drop form is a good example of this changed form..

The elegant cascade wedding bouquet reappeared on the wedding scene with a bang in the early 1980’s, thanks to Lady Diana of Britain who carried a sumptuous cascade bouquet on her wedding day. Brides must also thank the German floral designers for bringing a revival in the design and composition of the cascade wedding bouquet.
